Lung cancer in non-smokers is topic of talk by surgeon Dr. Daniel Boffa

Dr. Daniel Boffa, assistant professor of thoracic surgery, will speak on "Why Do Non-Smokers Get Lung Cancer" on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Yale New Haven Shoreline Medical Center, 111 Goose Lane, Guilford.

Boffa's talk will be held 6:30-8 p.m. It is free and the public is invited. For more information, call (888) 700-6543.

The event is sponsored by the Yale Cancer Center, Yale-New Haven Hospital and the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven.


Bolivian university awards honorary degree to researcher Immanuel Wallerstein

Immanuel Wallerstein, senior research scientist in sociology, was awarded a Doctor H.C. by the Universidad Mayor San Andrès, Bolivia's leading university, earlier this month. This was his 15th honoris causa.

While in Bolivia, Wallerstein was invited by the office of the vice-president and the Ministry of Economics and Finance to present a public seminar. He delivered three lectures in Spanish on the theme "Causes and Consequences of the Present World Economic Crisis."


Edward Kaplan is honored with a lecturership

Edward H. Kaplan earned the 2009 Philip McCord Morse Lectureship Award of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS).

Kaplan is the William N. and Marie A. Beach Professor of Management Sciences at the School of Management, professor of public health at the School of Medicine and professor of engineering at the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

The award was presented at the INFORMS annual meeting in San Diego on Oct. 11. It honors Philip McCord Morse in recognition of his pioneering contribution to the field of operations research and the management sciences. The lectureship, which has a term of two years, involves a plenary presentation to be delivered at a future INFORMS meeting and other talks to be delivered on behalf of the profession.
